Laser Facial Rejuvenation Facts

By Juanita Swindell

Facial skin tends to develop wrinkles and fine lines over a period of time. Fortunately, there are numerous cosmetic procedures that help in reducing these natural signs of aging. Laser facial rejuvenation is one of the newer cosmetic procedures that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the facial skin. It goes by many names. It is also called laserabrasion, laser vaporization or laser peel. This procedure is a very precise and modern cosmetic procedure that allows surgeons greater control in the laser surfacing treatment.

This procedure helps in:

• Reducing wrinkles or fine lines on the forehead and around the mouth nad eyes
• Removing acne and chickenpox scars
• Rejuvenating non-responsive skin post a facelift
• Revitalizes sun-damaged or aged skin
• Reducing liver spots
• Improving your complexion and removing grayish or yellowish skin-tones
• Removing warts
• Removal of birthmarks on the face
• Removing enlarged oil glands on the face

The Targeted Approach

In the laser facial rejuvenation treatment, a laser is used to send concentrated, short, pulsating light beams at any irregular facial skin. This helps in removing the damaged skin in a precise manner and every layer is removed methodically. This is a very targeted approach, which also means that the problems such as hypopigmentation are fewer. The outer layer of the skin or the epidermis is removed.

At the same time, it also heats the dermis, which is the underlying skin. This stimulates the growth of new collagen-fibers. Even as the treated area starts healing, the new skin is firmer and smoother.
This process is an effective one but the healing timeframe can be long. It takes 10-12 days for the redness and swelling to disappear and 2-3 months for the skin to regain normalcy. In this period of time, you have to be extra careful with looking after your skin. Post the procedure, the skin is very tender and the doctor will give you a cream or an ointment that has to be applied to the face at regular intervals through the day.

You will also have to keep your skin protected from the sun's rays and you are advised to wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face from the sun. You will have to visit the doctor once more after a fortnight for a regular checkup. This cosmetic procedure is generally not covered under insurance and you will have to check with the insurance company as well as the doctor about insurance coverage, if any.
