How To Prepare For A Chemical Peel

By Juanita Swindell

For those who are not used to cosmetic treatment, going for your first chemical peel can be a little daunting. It is important to ask as many questions as possible and give your dermatologist all the necessary information required in order to keep your skin safe and get the most out of the procedure.

Important Questions you Should Ask The Doctor

Asking the doctor a few questions before the procedure will not only help you put your mind at ease about the procedure but it will also allow you to prepare properly for the upcoming procedure. Here are some questions you can ask your dermatologist before the chemical peel:

• What sort of results should you expect after the peel?
• What are the common side effects that can occur?
• Is there any downtime after the procedure?
• What is the total cost of the treatment?

You should also ask questions related to the experience of the doctor who will be doing the chemical peel. Ask if the doctor is board certified and if he/she has done the procedure before on people with the same kind of skin color. You should also ask to see before and after pictures of others who have undergone the procedure from the same doctor.

Things You Should Tell The Dermatologist Before A Peel

Before your peel, you should be honest with your dermatologist and give him/her all the necessary information. This information will allow them to decide whether this treatment is fine for your skin and the dermatologist may even suggest another treatment option.

Here are some important things that you should tell your dermatologist before the chemical peel:

• Any kind of medication that you are on. This includes all the medicines that you have recently taken, even over-the-counter medicines like aspirin.
• Any vitamins, minerals or supplements that you take or have taken, even if it was some time ago
• All important information about your skin. This includes if you scar easily, if you get or used to get cold sores and if you have had any acne or been treated for acne
• All the surgeries and treatments that you have had. Remember, this is not the time to feel embarrassed about anything. It is for your safety and you need to be as detailed as possible.

Things To Carry With You When You Are Going For The Procedure

On the day of the procedure, remember to pack a pair of sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat and a scarf in your bag before leaving the house. After a procedure your skin will be sensitive and exposure can have an adverse effect so you need to take the proper precautions to protect your skin.
