Laser Treatment for Mild to Moderate Acne Scarring

By Mags Whyler

At some point in their lives, nearly everyone will suffer from spots and pimples, and whilst some people are lucky enough to recover without any permanent damage, many of them will be left with some form of scarring, whether it's mild or severe. It's not just teenagers who go through the agony of spots, as it's thought that one in five adults also suffer from acne. The embarrassment that many acne sufferers feel from having acne scars, can lead to stress, which may account for the amount of time that people spend trying to find a solution to make the scarring less visible.

There are different types of acne scars - the ice pick, atrophic and hypertrophic. Ice pick scars are deep pitted scars with steep edges. Atrophic scars have a pitted look, with smooth borders, and hypertrophic scars which are thick, bumpy scars that sit above the surface of the skin and are most common on the back and chest.

Even the mildest outbreak of acne can leave some scarring, and severe acne can leave scars that are clearly visible and very difficult to get rid of. Scars appear when spots or blemishes burst or break the skin. Scars can range from being mildly annoying, embarrassing, taking away your confidence, right up being genuinely disfiguring. Minor scars will heal naturally and should fade as time goes by, however, the deeper scars might take longer, but if they are here to stay, then laser treatment might be the answer.

Most advanced laser technology offers a safe and effective treatment of mild to moderate acne scars. The approved dual wavelength laser system is non ablative (the surface of the skin remains unchanged) and has almost no healing or recovery time. The gentle lasers reach deep down to the collagen level of the skin, and the precise therapeutic laser energy stimulates collagen production and elastin fibres, dramatically improving acne scars.

The advanced dual wavelength laser system has a cooled sapphire window on the tip of the laser scope to further protect and cool the skin. After treatment, you will be back to work in 4 to 6 days and the results are permanent.

You can combine laser treatments with other skin improving treatments, such as:

  • Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Technology
  • Microdermabrasion
  • SmartExideCo2 Fractional Laser
  • Chemical Skin Peel

The laser treatment time takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area, using a topical anaesthetic cream to make the procedure almost pain-free. Six treatments are recommended, spaced 3-4 weeks apart and gaining optimal results after 4 to 6 months. Most clients experience minimal discomfort as the laser pulses treat the skin, some may experience a minor stinging sensation. Experienced and fully trained aesthetic teams will recommend a range of treatments, tailoring your treatment plan specifically for you - either solo treatments or combining different treatments.
