4 Tips to Maintain Your Hair Extensions

By Leo Eigenberg

Creating the glorious head of hair is only possible for many with the help of extensions. They have the ability to instantly transform the look, but there is a need to provide ongoing care and attention to avoid issues with tangles or damage. Here are four tips to help take care of hair extensions:

Wash gently

If you have just had the permanent extensions put in, you want to avoid washing the hair for up to 48 hours. This gives the extensions enough time to fully adhere. After this, the preferred shampoo to use is silicone-free and sulfate-free. Make sure to wash gently and massage the roots and scalp to help break up and remove any debris. Also, follow-up with a preferred conditioner, but only use this on the ends because the emollients can lead to the adhesion dissolving and causing the hair extension to fall out. Also, for the clip in extension, the preferred time to wash is once every six to eight uses, and lay on a towel to slowly air dry.

Deep condition

The use of hot tools and styling products can soon start to have a negative impact on the hair extensions, so it is essential to put in place a regular schedule of deep conditioning. This can take place once monthly and leaves the hair looking shiny and healthy. Deep conditioning is a process of applying a hair mask from the mid-shaft to the tips and left in place for up to 25 minutes to increase the moisture content.

Use low alcohol hairspray

Nature hair is able to stay moisture-rich because of the oils in our scalp, but these natural oils are not able to benefit the extensions because they are not attached directly to the scalp. To help manage the hair and avoid hair looking frazzled it is helpful to style the hair using a hairspray. The preferred product should be low alcohol because the alternatives that are alcohol laden are certain to quickly lift the existing moisture from the extensions.

Keep extensions tangle free

If you regularly wash the hair late in the evening, make sure it is left to fully dry before going to bed. If the hair is left wet there is a great risk of tangling and breakage. It is possible to control and avoid knots in the permanent and bonded extensions by loosely braiding the strands before putting the head down. This is highly effective at keeping the hair tangle free and leaves the hair with soft waves. Also, the clip-in extensions should be removed at night to avoid issues with breakage.
